Best Logistics Companies For 2014

Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) plans to solve one of the Internet’s most vexing problems — most people around the world have no access to it. The notion that Facebook can do this reflects the kind of arrogance the company and its executives have become know for.

The social network issued a press release that said:

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, today announced the launch of internet.org, a global partnership with the goal of making internet access available to the next 5 billion people.

Zuckerberg certainly haslined up an impressive set of partners:

The founding members of internet.org — Facebook, Ericsson, MediaTek, Nokia, Opera, Qualcomm and Samsung — will develop joint projects, share knowledge, and mobilize industry and governments to bring the world online.

Bringing the Internet to five billion people is akin to bringing them food, water or education. The logistics and expense defy even the financial power of companies like Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) and the weak balance sheets of struggling corporations like Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK). The price to accomplish the goal would stretch into the hundreds of billions of dollars, given the nearly impossible task of creating an infrastructure to reach billions of people, let alone sharply cut the costs of what people who are poor or live in poor nations would pay.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) is one of the Dow's leaders today, rising 1.8%. IDC released a report predicting a 7.8% drop in PC sales this year, but it didn't predict an outright disaster for the PC in the long term. In 2014, shipments are expected to fall 1.2% from 321.9 million this year, but volume is expected to recover to 333 million units in 2017. The PC refresh cycle has changed dramatically in recent years because PCs last longer than ever before. That's keeping consumers from upgrading to Windows 8, but in the long term, IDC doesn't think they'll give up PCs altogether.

Once again, the portal edged out the search firm–based on desktop visitors, Yahoo! had 194.6 million in November, as opposed to 192.7 million, according tonew data from comScore. The surprise winner of the day is Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) , which is up 3.4%. The company said revenue rose 17.8% in the quarter to $20.5 billion, while net income jumped 19% to $6.06 billion, or $0.72 per share. Both numbers beat estimates, and the company appears to be surviving the decline of the PC much better than expected. In fact, the Windows division saw revenue increase 23% thanks to upgrades to Windows 8, so Microsoft is beginning to transition consumers to its new products. The downfall of Microsoft has been called prematurely, and I think this stock is a great buy because of its profitable enterprise businesses and upside in mobile.

Yesterday, small cap oil and gas stock Penn Virginia Corporation (NYSE: PVA) surged 14.84% after reporting earnings and was also rising close to 6% inpre-market tradingmeaning it might be worth taking a closer look at the small cap along with the performance of ETF peers IQ Global Oil Small Cap ETF (NYSEARCA: IOIL) and PowerShares S&P SmallCap Energy Portfolio (NASDAQ: PSCE). After all, a look at the longer term chart of Penn Virginia Corporation does not reveal a pretty picture for investors over the long haul.
