Smartphones and tablets
While Microsoft has received varied reviews of its Surface tablet, getting a product on shelves was an important step. This is not likely to be a huge number for the company, but any clarity that you get will serve as an important baseline looking ahead. As the company must compete not only with Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL ) market leading iPads but also with the growing base of Android tablets, establishing itself as an option is critical. - [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]
Farhad Manjoo of Slate wrote a very interesting piece after Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) reported earnings last week, arguing that the iPad is poised to lead Apple's next wave of growth. Manjoo compares the iPad to the iPod, where Apple has been able to retain a dominant market share for over a decade. He claims that the iPad will perform similarly for Apple, while the iPhone has already lost its dominant position and will remain a niche product, albeit a highly profitable one.

But Google CEO Larry Page wasn't fooling anyone; buying Motorola Mobility was a direct means to go after Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) and Samsung in the lucrative U.S. smartphone OEM market. Google's partnership with LG has already produced a Nexus smartphone, and Motorola has some, too, but that's so un-Google. If we've learned anything over the past couple of years, it's that Google isn't afraid to aggressively enter new markets with guns blazing: Google Fiber, the use of white space for wireless connectivity, self-driving cars, Glass -- the list goes on and on.

For instance, five years ago, the financial crisis hit banking stocks hard, but it was the overall recessionary conditions that helped bring the entire market down. Some companies, though, made the most of the recession and gained ground. McDonald's (NYSE: MCD ) , for instance, benefited from the move away from more expensive casual restaurants, meeting customers' needs with expanded menu offerings that still offered solid value for those who'd moved down from other eating-out options. Similarly, Family Dollar (NYSE: FDO ) and several other deep-discount retailers poached business from higher-cost alternatives as households cut their budgets.

Ricardo Ricote Rodríguez/Flickr World's biggest fast-food chain seeks new ketchup for its famous french fries. McDonald's Corp (MCD) on Friday said it plans to end its 40-year relationship with ketchup maker H.J. Heinz Co, since that company is now led by Bernardo Hees, the former chief executive of hamburger rival Burger King Worldwide Inc. "As a result of recent management changes at Heinz, we have decided to transition our business to other suppliers over time," McDonald's said in a statement. "We have spoken to Heinz and plan to work together to ensure a smooth and orderly transition," said McDonald's, which has more than 34,000 restaurants around the globe. Heinz declined to comment. "As a matter of policy, Heinz does not comment on relationships with customers," company spokesman Michael Mullen said. The switch will be more apparent overseas than in the United States, as McDonald's only serves Heinz ketchup in two domestic markets - Pittsburgh and Minneapolis, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported on Friday. Indeed, ketchup packages handed out at McDonald's restaurants in the United States often say only "fancy ketchup." Most in-store ketchup dispensers are not branded. The move from McDonald's could benefit Heinz ketchup rivals Hunt's, owned by ConAgra Foods Inc, and Del Monte. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and an investment fund affiliated with 3G Capital bought Heinz for $28 billion in June and immediately named Hees CEO. Burger King went public in June 2012, less than two years after it was taken private by 3G Capital Management LLC, which retains a stake in the fast-food chain.
