Hot Gas Companies To Own In Right Now

Of all the hazards the oil refining industry routinely deals with, the sentiment of its investors may be the most volatile.

That was on display again last week when refining shares tanked on the news that the US government had reinterpreted a longstanding ban on crude exports to enable the routine shipping overseas of the ultralight crude known as oil condensate after minimal processing.

Condensate is a less dense, more volatile variety of oil that typically exists as gas within the reservoir but condenses into a liquid at the lower surface pressure and temperature. On the API gravity scale of density, condensate is generally anything above 45 degrees, though definitions vary. Gasoline is 50 degrees, and in the aggregate the condensate produced in the US is likely a bit lighter than that. Condensate has on occasion been poured straight into the gas tank of a car, though I would not recommend it.

We believe capture rates [how much of the difference between the cost of oil and refined products a company can earn. Ed. ] troughed in 3Q13 and most US refiners will show a quarter-over-quarter improvement as differentials were widening and the WTI curve moved to contango from backwardation. Positive refining revisions will positively impact [Exxon Mobil] more than [Chevron], as[Exxon Mobil] has significantly more absolute N. American refining capacity. Marketing margins [the margins from selling the finished product to the retail market. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By stanh30]

In 2010 Brazil HRT Participacoes em Petroleo S.A. (HRTPY.PK) raised $1.5 billion in an IPO to fund a highly touted and highly expensive oil & gas exploration campaign in both the Amazon and offshore Namibia. Management was very promotional and overpromised and underdelivered. The three exploration wells in Namibia were all failures and the Conclusion of Solimoes Gas Monetization Study leads the market (myself included) to conclude that there is little or no present value in the discoveries in the Solimoes basin. The stock has lost 85% in just the last year, and over 97% in the last three years. Early investors like Southeastern Asset Management have lost most of their money and have either given up or believe the market cap has become too small and insignificant to warrant further examination.

The most recent firms to experience this kind of pressure have been Hess (NYSE: HES  ) and Transocean (NYSE: RIG  ) . Each company has been forced to defend the roles its individual chairmen have played in the firms' current progress, or lack thereof in this case.

Most of the Chinese companies that I purchased now reside on the Pink Sheets or have disappeared altogether, but at one time they all traded on major US exchanges. One of them (AOB), even received the honor of ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange in 2007, and people say that crime does not pay.
