Hot Media Stocks To Invest In 2014

IRA rollover contributions in the U.S. surpassed $321.3 billion at the end of 2012, an increase of 7.3% over the previous year, with a “large portion” of the contributions coming from defined contribution plans, according to Cerulli Associates.

In 2013, rollovers rose even further to $357.7 billion, an 11.3% increase, Cerulli estimates in its not-yet-finalized 2014 study.

In its Retirement Markets 2013: Data & Dynamics of Employer-Sponsored Plans report, Cerulli found that IRAs represent the largest segment within the retirement market based on assets. IRAs, Cerulli said, “benefit from years of accumulation” in DC plans. However, the report says, “the lack of retirement income component on a widespread basis in DC plans means assets will continue to roll to IRAs, which will drive future growth in that market.”

Waldert notes that because participants “do not necessarily roll over their assets immediately after leaving their employer,” instead waiting months or even years to do so, Cerulli advises plan providers to inform participants that IRA accounts are available so assets don’t leave the provider if the participant decides to roll over. “Immediately connecting with separated participants is essential in capturing assets.”

FactSet pegs both companies2014 enterprise value at 10 times EBITDA, which is less than bigger players such as Walt Disney (DIS), Time Warner (TWX) and Viacom (VIAB). If the two firms continue to operate independently of one another, they run the risk of becoming also-rans in the cable network consolidation game. Together, they have a better chance of naming their price when the big boys eventually come knocking.

Now that Man of Steel has proven to be a success, fans are wondering if Time Warner's (NYSE: TWX  ) next step will be to pair its two biggest superheroes in a big-screen team-up, says Fool contributor Tim Beyers in the following video.

Fans' interest in a Batman-Superman film comes at an interesting time. Next week, Warner and DC Entertainment will be at San Diego Comic-Con to talk more about its big-screen plans, which presumably include a Justice League film by 2015.

Would such an accelerated schedule make sense? And if not, would a Batman-Superman film make more sense? Tim isn't sure, if only because the logistics of pulling off such an audacious project while also filming Man of Steel 2 might be too much for Warner to do well.

It's been a solid year for Thompson Reuters (TRI); since the calendar flipped over to January, this $30 billion financial media firm has rallied more than 22%. But don't worry if you've missed out on the move -- TRI looks well-positioned for higher levels thanks to the pattern that's been setting up in shares.

Thompson Reuters is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by horizontal resistance above shares at the $35.50 level and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as TRI bounces in between those two technically-important price levels, it's getting squeezed closer and closer to a confirmed breakout above that $35.50 price level. When the breakout happens, it's time to be a buyer.

TRI closed above the $35.50 level in yesterday's session, but it's a little early to call it a breakout just yet. If shares can hold above that breakout level all through today's session, then the buy signal is worth heeding.

The principal properties owned by Montana-Dakota for use in its electric operations include interests in 10 electric generating facilities and three small portable diesel generators, as further described under System Supply, System Demand and Competition, approximately 3,100 and 4,700 miles of transmission and distribution lines, respectively and 51 transmission and 268 distribution substations. Montana-Dakota has obtained and holds valid and existing franchises authorizing it to conduct its electric operations in all of the municipalities it serves where such franchises are required.

The Company, through the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator, Inc. (Midwest ISO), Montana-Dakota has access to wholesale energy, ancillary services and capacity markets. The Midwest ISO is a regional transmission organization responsible for operational control of the transmission systems of its members. The Midwest ISO provides security center operations, tariff administration and operates day-ahead and real-time energy markets, ancillary services and capacity markets. In 2012, Montana-Dakota purchased approximately 27 % of its net kilowatts-hour needs for its interconnected system through the Midwest ISO market.

Montana-Dakota serves markets in portions of western North Dakota, including Bismarck, Mandan, Dickinson and Williston; eastern Montana, including Glendive and Miles City; and northern South Dakota, including Mobridge. The maximum electric peak demand experienced to date attributable to Montana-Dakota's sales to retail customers on the interconnected system was 573,587 kilowatts in July, 2012. The interconnected system consists of nine electric generating facilities and three small portable diesel generators, which has an aggregate nameplate rating attributable to Montana-Dakota's interest of 488,905 kilowatts. Through the Sheridan System, which is a separate electric system o! wned by M! ontana-Dakota, Montana-Dakota serves Sheridan, Wyoming, and neighboring communities. The maximum peak demand attributable to Montana-Dakota sales to retail customers on that system was approximately 61,501 kilowatts in July, 2012.

Montana-Dakota's four principal generating stations are steam-turbine generating units, which uses coal for fuel. The nameplate rating for Montana-Dakota's ownership interest in these four stations , including interests in the Big Stone Station and the Coyote Station, aggregating 22.7 % and 25%, respectively is 327,758 kilowatts. Two combustion turbine peaking stations, two wind electric generating facilities, a heat recovery electric generating facility and three small portable diesel generators supply the balance of Montana-Dakota's interconnected system electric generating capability.

The Coyote coal supply agreement provides for the purchase of coal necessary to supply the coal requirements of the Coyote Station or 30,000 tons per week, whichever may be the greater quantity at contracted pricing. The Heskett and Lewis & Clark coal supply agreements provide for the purchase of coal necessary to supply the coal requirements of these stations at contracted pricing. Montana-Dakota estimates the Heskett and Lewis & Clark coal requirement to be in the range of 450,000 to 550,000 tons and 250,000 to 350,000 tons per contract year, respectively

Whereas other players like patent portfolio names like InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC) and Vringo, Inc. 10 Best Life Sciences Stocks To Watch Right Now

10 Best Life Sciences Stocks To Watch Right Now: Sarepta Therapeutics Inc (SRPT)

Sarepta Therapeutics Inc., formerly AVI BioPharma, Inc., incorporated on July 22, 1980, biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of ribonucleic acid (RNA)-based therapeutics for the treatment of rare and infectious diseases. The Company's product candidates include Eteplirsen, AVI-6002, AVI-6003, and AVI-7100. As of December 31, 2011, the Company primarily focused on advancing the development of its Duchenne muscular dystrophy drug candidates, including its lead product candidate, eteplirsen, which is in a Phase IIb trial. The Company is also focused on developing therapeutics for the treatment of infectious diseases, including its lead infectious disease programs aimed at the development of drug candidates for the Ebola and Marburg hemorrhagic fever viruses. The Company's program focuses on the development of disease-modifying therapeutic candidates for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The Company initiated a Phase IIb trial for eteplirsen in August 2011 with an objective of initiating a pivotal trial subsequent to 2011.

The Company is also leveraging the capabilities of its RNA-based technology platforms to develop therapeutics for the treatment of infectious diseases. The Company's RNA-based drug programs are clinically evaluated for the treatment of DMD and have also demonstrated anti-viral activity in infectious diseases such as Ebola, Marburg and H1N1 influenza in certain animal models. The Company's lead product candidates are at various stages of development.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Program

The Company's lead program is designed to address specific gene mutations that result in DMD by forcing the genetic machinery to skip over an adjacent contiguous piece of RNA and, thus, restore the ability of the cell to express a new, truncated but! functional, dystrophin protein.

Eteplirsen is an antisense PMO-based therapeutic in clinical development for the treatmen t of individuals with DMD who have an error in the gene codi! ng for dystrophin that can be treated by skipping exon 51. Eteplirsen targets the frequent series of mutations that cause DMD. Eteplirsen has been granted orphan drug designation in the United States and European Union. In addition to the Company's lead product candidate, eteplirsen, the Company is actively pursues development of a product candidate that skips exon 45 through an IND-enabling collaboration.

Anti-Viral Programs

The Company is implementing its RNA-based technology platforms in its anti-viral programs for the development of therapeutics to treat viruses, such as Ebola, Marburg and influenza. The Company's arrangement with DoD supporting the development of the Company's Ebola and Marburg virus drug candidates provides funding for all clinical and licensure activities necessary to obtain approval of a New Drug Application (NDA), by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), if DoD exercises all of its options under the arrange ment. During the year ended December 31, 2011, the Company paused its clinical development efforts on AVI-7100 and is exploring funding opportunities or partnerships with DHHS and industry collaborators to advance its development.

The Company's anti-viral therapeutic programs use the Company's translation suppression technology and applies its PMOplus chemistry backbone, an advanced generation of its base PMO chemistry backbone that selectively introduces positive backbone charges to improve selective interaction between the drug and its target. The Company's translation suppressing technology is based on Translation Suppressing Oligomers (TSOs), which are PMO-based compounds that stop or suppress the translation of a specific protein by binding to their specific target sequence in mRNA.

The Company is pursuing dev! elopment ! and regulatory approval of its Ebola and Marburg hemorrhagic fever virus product candidates under the FDA's Animal Rule. The Co mpany's lead product candidate against the Ebola virus infec! tion is A! VI-6002. For Marburg virus infection, the Company's lead product candidate has been AVI-6003. In February 2012, the Company announced that the Company received approval from the FDA to remove one of the two oligomers composing AVI-6003 and proceed with a single oligomer approach, AVI-7288, given that efficacy in non-human primates has been demonstrated to be attributable to this single oligomer. The Company is exploring the feasibility of alternate routes of administration of its Ebola and Marburg drug candidates, and at DoD's invitation, the Company is developing a proposal to be submitted for a study to demonstrates feasibility of the intramuscular route.

AVI-6002, which is a combination of AVI-7537 and AVI-7539, is designed for post-exposure prophylaxis after documented or suspected exposure to the Ebola virus. The Company is evaluating the feasibility of developing AVI-7537 as a single agent for the post-exposure prophylaxis after documented or suspected exp osure to Ebola virus. AVI-6003, which is a combination of AVI-7287 and AVI-7288, is designed for post-exposure prophylaxis after documented or suspected exposure to Marburg virus. In February 2012, the Company announced that the Company received approval from the FDA to proceed with AVI-7288 as a single agent against Marburg virus infection. The Company intends to proceed with dosing AVI-7288 in the Phase I multiple ascending dose studies and in non-human primate studies.

Influenza Program

The Company's anti-viral therapeutic programs are also focused on the development of the Company's product candidates designed to treat pandemic influenza viruses. AVI-7100 is the Company's lead product candidate for the treatment of influenza and employs its PMOplus technology. In June 2011, the Company initiated dosing! of AVI-7! 100 through intravenous infusion in single-ascending doses in up to 48 healthy adult volunteers. As of December 31, 2011, the Company pau sed its clinical development efforts on AVI-7100 and are exp! loring fu! nding opportunities or partnerships to advance its development.

The Company has developed three new phosphorodiamidate-linked morpholino oligomers (PMO)-based chemistry platforms in addition to its original PMO-based technology. The Company's PMO-based molecules are designed to sterically block the access of cellular machinery to pre-mRNA and mRNA without degrading the RNA. Through this selective targeting, two distinct biologic mechanisms of action can be initiated: modulation of pre-mRNA splicing and inhibition of mRNA translation.

The Company competes with GlaxoSmithKline plc, Toyama Chemical, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corp., Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Prosensa, and Santaris Pharma A/S.

It's not every day that a stock is up 40% but still might have another 50%+ to go. However, that is the case with Sarepta Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ:SRPT).

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Sarepta Therapeutics (SRPT) and Plug Power (PLUG) are falling in after-hours trading after the two companies announced plans to sell more shares.

Sarepta Therapeutics said it plans to sell as much as $100 million in new shares and also granted underwriters a 30-day option to buy as much as $15 million more. Plug Power announced a sale, but said the amount would depend on “market and other conditions.”

Shares of Sarepta Therapeutics have fallen 4.5% to $38.79 at 4:49 p.m. in after-hours trading, while Plug Power has tumbled 8.7% to $6.12.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Sarepta Therapeutics (SRPT) have surged more than 40% today after the biotech company said that the FDA would consider one of its drugs sooner than expected. The Wa! ll Street! Journal explains:

Sarepta Therapeutics Inc. said Monday that it would submit a new drug application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration by the end of the year for its experimental treatment for a fatal degenerative disease that afflicts children.

Shares surged more than 50% in early trading as the news seemed to mark a reversal in the company’s dealings with the FDA.

Late last year, the agency suggested that the company needed to do a larger, late-stage study for eteplirsen, which treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy treatment, a fatal disease that destroys muscle tissue in children and afflicts about one in every 3,500 boys born across the globe, according to Sarepta.

Leerink’s Joseph Schwartz and Paul Matteis are “intrigued” by the FDA’s decision:

We are intrigued that the FDA is allowing [Sarepta] to start a confirmatory eteplirsen study with an open-label design, although we are cautious that the FDA is also encouraging the company to start placebo-controlled studies for other exon-skippers as soon as possible in order to build the case for eteplirsen approval. We are cautious that the FDA will have the same concerns that were highlighted in today’s press release when it reviews eteplirsen in 2015, and may opt to continue to wait for more controlled data to be convinced. Importantly, the FDA believes it is not appropriate to exclude patients who lose ambulation while on drug from the analysis (modified intent-to- treat), which has been key for eteplirsen to compare favorably to historical control (which includes such patients). The FDA has shown a willingness to be patient and wait for more compelling/controlled data before approving eteplirsen so we see the risk that the FDA continues to do so beyo

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Stepan (NYSE: SCL  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Stepan doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, not so great. Trailing-12-month revenue decreased 4.8%, and inventory increased 30.6%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks potentially problematic. Revenue dropped 1.9%, and inventory grew 30.6%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks OK but not great. Revenue grew 6.9%, and inventory grew 9.5%.

Concerns about the political uncertainty in Ukraine caused some volatility in the markets Friday afternoon, with the major indexes making several U-turns ahead of the weekend. The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI), which had been up by as much as 125 points, briefly dropped into loss territory before rebounding to end 49 points higher. The Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) edged up 5 points, adding to Thursday's record high, but the Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) lost 10 points. AP/Darko VojinovicPro-Russian militias have seized local government buildings in Crimea, Ukraine; the unrest there is making investors around the world nervous. February was a great month for investors. All three major averages jumped by about 4 percent. UnitedHealth Group (UNH) led the blue chips, gaining 1½ percent. Other health providers – Aetna (AET), Wellpoint (WLP), Cigna (CI) and Humana (HUM) -- all gained between 1½ and 2 percent. And retail stocks remained active. Target (TGT) added another 3 percent. Best Buy rose 4 percent, and Fred's (FRED), a regional department store chain, jumped 10 percent. But Pier 1 (PIR) fell 5½ percent after lowering its earnings outlook for a second time. That led to a series of brokerage downgrades. Decker Outdoor (DECK) tumbled 12 percent. The maker of footwear brands such as Ugg and Teva issued a weak outlook. And apparel maker Lululemon (LULU) fell 5-percent on negative comments from Credit Suisse. It seems as though there are always some big movers in the drug and biotech sectors – and that was certainly the case today. Endologix (ELGX) slid 24 percent after forecasting lower revenue growth. Questcor (QCOR) fell 10 percent. It's lost big for three straight days amid allegations of questionable business practices. David Mercer/APPatrick Lamanske of Champaign, Ill., works with Amanda Ziemnisky, right, of the Champaign Urbana Public Health District office in Champaign to try to sign his wife, Ping Lamanske, left, up for health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act. NEW YORK -- For Americans who are able to check out new insurance plans launched under President Barack Obama's health care reform, the price differences from state to state may be surprising. Residents of Minnesota, a Democratic-led state, are likely to pay the lowest monthly premiums in the country. Just two states away, some residents of Republican-dominated Wyoming might be surprised to find they will pay among the highest. But the ideological debate between Obamacare's supporters and opponents seems to have had little relevance when it comes to the affordability of care, the main goal of the Democratic president's signature program, health economists and actuaries say. Instead, they point to regional differences in medical costs, the relative health and age of local populations and competition among insurers as having greater influence over the monthly premiums. Those differences lead to a wide variance in prices between states, and even within states. Of the 24 states that fall below a national average of $328 in monthly premiums, laid out in a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services analysis last month, at least half are dominated by Republican state governments. The affordability of the plans will likely determine whether enough uninsured Americans, particularly young and healthy ones, sign up to make the program successful. The new insurance plans became available for enrollment nationwide on Oct. 1. But technical problems with the federal government's health care.gov website serving 36 states have blocked millions of people from accessing the information. In Wyoming, the cheapest mid-tier plan, or "silver" plan, costs $307 for a 27-year old in Laramie County, one of the state's only

'Poor' tweet by federal lender prompts backlash

fafsa tweet NEW YORK (CNNMoney) For social media managers, reaching young audiences with irreverent memes and tweets is a dangerous endeavor.

The latest entity to end up with egg on its face is the Federal Student Aid office, which on Tuesday tweeted an image that many readers felt mocked the poor.

The image, a common meme derived from the 2011 comedy "Bridesmaids," features Kristen Wiig's character pouting about being sent back to her coach seat after sneaking her way into first class, with the caption "Help me. I'm poor."

It encouraged readers to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, which gives students and would-be students access to the office's financial aid programs. FAFSA is also required by many colleges, universities and private financial aid providers.

"If this is you, then you better fill out your FAFSA," the tweet underneath the image said, according to screen shots that users took. (The tweet has since been taken down.)

Within minutes, almost universal condemnation of the tweet started spreading across the social networking site, calling it "offensive" and "tasteless" and mocking its attempts at outreach.

The Federal Student Aid office, which is part of the U.S. Department of Education, controls more than $150 billion in grants, loans and work-study money that is distributed to more than 15 million students each year.

It apologized for the tweet around ! 1 am on Wednesday morning.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education called the post "insensitive" and said it "flies in the face of our mission of opening doors of opportunity for every student."

"It was an ill-conceived attempt at reaching students through social media," the spokeswoman, Dorie Nolt, said. "We are reviewing our process for approving social media content to ensure it reflects the high standards we expect at the U.S. Department of Education."

The Federal Student Aid office is by no means alone in having goofed on social media recently.

On June 17, Delta Air Lines (DAL) posted images of the Statue of Liberty and a giraffe to celebrate the U.S. win over Ghana in the World Cup. Followers quickly pointed out that Ghana has no giraffes.

Back in March, a campaign launched on Twitter to cancel "The Colbert Report" after the show's verified account tweeted out a message that many felt was racist against Asians. The show's host, Stephen Colbert, denied involvement with the tweet.

The show survived the campaign, and despite the gaffe, Colbert was named as David Letterman's replacement a few weeks later.

Venture capitalist Andreessen unleashes tweetstorm

We have seen personal branding efforts on Twitter before — no social media platform has proven better suited for it — but there's been nothing like the tweetstorm Marc Andreessen has unleashed in the last three months.

There have already been more than 3000 tweets in March alone; more than 10,000 since January 1st—a staggering torrent of 140-character-at-a-time comments, jokes, retweets, even multi-part lectures extending over a dozen or more consecutive tweets.

Andreessen, the Silicon Valley venture capital investor, is one of the seminal figures of the technology world. He arrived on the scene in the early 90s, the towheaded and self-assured boy-wonder developer of Mosaic, the first graphical web browser, who would join Jim Clark to found Netscape and help jumpstart the Web era.

Twenty years later, the hair is gone, but based on the sheer variety of topics he's got an opinion about, the know-it-all self-assurance remains (a gushing fan on Twitter recently labeled him a "genius polymath").

In the last month alone, we've seen Andreessen the management sage, opining in 12 tweets on the Wall Street Journal's insider's report on the way Bill Gross was running bond firm PIMCO: "This exact same behavior/pattern is often found in both the best-performing companies in any space AND in the worst-performing."

There's Andreessen the advertising expert, dressing down the industry: "My view: Agencies can only fulfill demand. Suppliers (publishers) need to go to CMO & in-house marketing people directly."

Andreessen the Bitcoin booster appears repeatedly. His firm Andreessen Horowitz is an investor in Coinbase, a startup offering digital wallets for Bitcoin. There's been a 7-tweet attack on West Virginia senator Joe Manchin for proposing a Bitcoin ban ("Manchin FOR suppressing pro-consumer & pro-small business innovation in financial services to increase choices, lower fees, sell globally"). There's a 10-tweet critique of Newsweek's claim it had discovered the man who! created Bitcoin, which devolved into a back-and-forth exchange with several journalists about the media coverage of technology in general.

And, most recently, an off-hand jibe at Warren Buffett for dismissing Bitcoin.

Andreessen the historian, in a Bitcoin sidebar, offers up a 12-part introduction to King Louis XV's finance minister: "The most interesting person in Western history who most people have never heard of is John Law, inventor of concept of paper money."

Andreessen the ethicist unleashes a 12-tweet broadside apparently prompted by the funding of Secret, the anonymous commenting social media app which raised $8.6 million in mid-March. "I think as designers, investors, commentators, we need to seriously ask ourselves whether some of these systems are legitimate and worthy. Not from a user engagement point of view, not from an investment return point of view, but from an ethical and moral point of view."

The list of topics goes on: San Francisco housing. Free trade. Chinese bond markets. And, with the 20th anniversary of the founding of Netscape on the horizon, a series of nostalgic memories about that era, and about Jim Clark, his Netscape co-founder and early mentor.

None of Andreessen's recent Twitter lectures received wider exposure than his bullish prognostications in February about the future of news, with his outrageous forecast that the business could grow as much as 100 times larger than its current size over the next 20 years, which prompted an endless round of navel-gazing responses from the media industry itself, most of it ranging from disbelief to horror (no industry indulges self-loathing more than the media).

It's not like Andreessen needs to be doing any of this for the publicity, or to generate deal flow from prospective startups. He and his firm have already made themselves into perhaps the pre-eminent VC firm of this era, having hit recent home runs with its investments in Skype, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, among others.

On T! hursday, ! Andreessen Horowitz closed the financing on its latest investment fund, raising $1.5 billion from its limited partners to invest in even more companies.

Pure ego may be at work, as this isn't the first time he's taken to a digital media platform to post in volume: several years ago when personal blogging was at its height, Andreessen engaged in a similar exercise, churning out a well-received series of posts on his personal blog over several months which together served as a primer for aspiring entrepreneurs.

And, of course his early mentors, including Clark and Netscape investor John Doerr (Andreessen's predecessor atop the Silicon Valley VC ziggurat) certainly were never shy about self-promotion in their day, and Andreessen has always been a quick study when it came to taking lessons from his elders.

Best Construction Companies To Buy Right Now

The timing of the launch of his current Twitter frenzy has also proved fortuitous in helping him ward off a set of attacks against his personal integrity. The attacks were launched by noted corporate raider Carl Icahn, who has accused Andreessen of double-dealing while serving as an eBay board member by convincing eBay to divest itself of two businesses — Skype and Kynectic — at prices that were too low.

Andreessen Horowitz subsequently invested in both independent businesses, earning a handsome profit in particular on Skype when it was sold to Microsoft. In between his tweets on other subjects, Andreessen has sprinkled in a series of links rebutting and even counterattacking against Icahn.

How long this lasts is anyone's guess: Andreessen told Recode's Kara Swisher back in January that he intended to keep this up all year. But he launched his blogging career with similar promise, only to run dry in a few months. "Well I started a VC firm, so I was busy," was the excuse he offered Swisher. If you don't want to miss the high-v! olume pha! se of his Twitter career, better follow @pmarca before it's too late.
