In the latest move in a broad deleveraging effort, Spanish telecom incumbent Telefonica (NYSE: TEF  ) has divested one of its European subsidiaries. The company announced that it has reached agreement to sell Telefonica Ireland to Hong Kong-based conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Group. The potential total price is 850 million euros ($1.1 billion), 780 million euros ($1.0 billion) of which will be handed over at the closing of the transaction while 70 million euros�($92 million) will take the form of a deferred payment to be transferred when certain financial objectives are met.

Telefonica will use the proceeds of the sale to reduce its debt. The company's current deleveraging program aims to reduce total indebtedness to under 47 billion euros ($62 billion) this year. This would be down notably from the peak of 56 billion euros ($73 billion) the firm reached in 2011. Its current market capitalization is nearly 45 billion euros ($59 billion).

Mobile Telecommunication Services

As of December 31, 2010, the Company had approximately 7.8 million subscribers located in 1,281 municipalities in Region II. As of December 31, 2010, 87.5% of the Company�� customers subscribed to pre-paid plans and 12.5% subscribed to post-paid plans. The Company markets Oi Ligador subscriptions to its pre-paid customers, which allow these customers to receive bonus minutes with each purchase of additional credits. It charges a nominal subscription fee to enroll a customer in the Oi Ligador program and provide bonus minutes to these customers that may be used for local calls to its fixed-line or mobile subscribers, long-distance calls to its fixed-line subscribers, and sending Short Message Service (SMS, messages to mobile subscribers of any Brazilian mobile service provider.

The Company has roaming agreements with TNL PCS S.A., a wholly owned subsidiary of Telemar which provides mobile services and which it refers to as Oi, Companhia de Telecomunicacoes do Brasil Central (CTBC), and Sercomtel S.A. Telecomunicacoes (Sercomtel), providing its customers with automatic access to roaming services when traveling outside of Region II in areas of Brazil where mobile telecommunication services are available on the GSM standard. As of December 31, 2010, it had launched third generation (3G) services in a total of 84 municipalities, ! including! the nine state capitals in Region II and the Federal District. As of December 31, 2010, it had approximately 175,200 3G mobile broadband customers.

Data Transmission Services

The Company provides Internet access services using ADSL technology, which it refers as broadband services, to residential customers and businesses in the primary cities in Region II under the brand name Oi Velox. As of December 31, 2010, the Company offered broadband services in 1,810 municipalities in Region II and it had 1.9 million ADSL customers. Its network supports ADSL2+, VDSL2 and FTTx technologies. ADSL2+ is a data communications technology that allows data transmission at speeds of up to 24 megabits per second downstream and 1 megabits per second upstream. ADSL2+ permits offer a range of services than ADSL, including Internet protocol television (IPTV). As of December 31, 2010, approximately 50% of its fixed-line network had been updated to support ADSL2+. Very-high-bitrate digital subscriber line (VDSL2), is a DSL technology providing faster data transmission, up to 100 megabits per second upstream (downstream and upstream). Fiber to the x (FTTx), is a broadband network architecture that uses optical fiber to replace all or part of the usual metal local loop used for last mile telecommunications.

The Company provides a range of data transmission services through various technologies and means of access. Its commercial data transmission services include Industrial Exploitation of Dedicated Lines (Exploracao Industrial de Linha Dedicada (EILD)), under which it leases trunk lines to other telecommunication services providers, primarily mobile services providers, which use these trunk lines to link their radio base stations to their switching centers; Dedicated Line Services (Servicos de Linhas Dedicadas (SLD)), under which it leases dedicated lines to other telecommunication services providers, Internet service providers (ISPs) and corporate customers for use in private networks that! link dif! ferent corporate Websites; Internet Protocol (IP) services, which consist of dedicated private lines and dial-up Internet access, which it provides to the ISPs in Brazil, as well as Virtual Private Network (VPN), services that enable its customers to operate private Intranet and extranet networks, and frame relay services, which the Company provides to its corporate customers to allow them to transmit data using protocols based on direct use of its transmission lines, enabling the creation of VPNs.

The Company provides these data transmission services using its service network platform in Region II and its nationwide fiber optic cable network and microwave links. In addition, it provides services at the six cyber data centers located in Brasilia, Sao Paulo, Curitiba, Porto Alegre and Fortaleza. It provides hosting, collocation and information technology (IT) outsourcing at these centers, permitting its customers to outsource their IT structures to it or to use these centers to provide backup for their IT systems. Through this network, it offers international data transportation services, primarily leased lines to other telecommunication services providers.

Network Usage Services (Interconnection Service)

The Company is authorized to charge for the use of its local fixed-line network on a per-minute basis for all calls terminated on its local fixed-line network in Region II that originate on the networks of other local fixed-line, mobile and long-distance service providers, and all long-distance calls originated on its local fixed-line network in Region II that are carried by other long-distance service providers. In addition, the Company charges network usage fees to long-distance service providers and operators of trunking services that connect switching stations to its local fixed-line networks.

Traffic Transporta! tion Serv! ices

The Company offers a long-distance usage service, called national transportation, under which it provides discounts to its long-distance network usage fees based on the volume of traffic and geographic distribution of calls generated by a long-distance or mobile services provider. The Company also offers international telecommunication service providers the option to terminate their Brazilian inbound traffic through its network, as an alternative to Embratel and Intelig Telecomunicacoes Ltda. (Intelig). The Company charges international telecommunication service providers a per-minute rate, based on whether a call terminates on a fixed-line or mobile telephone and the location of the local area in which the call terminates.

Public Telephone Services

The Company owns and operates public telephones throughout Region II. As of December 31, 2010, the Company had approximately 266,100 public telephones in service, which are operated by pre-paid cards.

Value-Added Services

Value-added services include voice, text and data applications, including voicemail, caller identification (ID), and other services, such as personalization (video downloads, games, ring tones and wallpaper), short message service (SMS)subscription services (horoscope, soccer teams and love match), chat, mobile television, location-based services and applications (mobile banking, mobile search, email and instant messaging). The Company also provides advanced voice services to its corporate customers, mainly 0800 (toll free) services, as well as voice portals where customers can participate in real-time chats and other interactive voice services. The Company also operates an Internet portal under the brand name iG.

The Company competes with Empresa Brasileira de Telecomunicacoes, GVT S.A., Vivo Participacoes S.A., Telecom Americas Group, TIM Participacoes S.A., Telesp and Intelig.

This stock has been downtrending badly for the last five months, with shares sliding lower from its high of $1.97 to its recent 52-week low of 76 cents per share. During that downtrend, shares of OBIR have been making mostly lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of OIBR now look ready to rebound and potentially trigger a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if OIBR manages to take out Thursday's intraday high of 86 cents to more near-term overhead resistance at 90 cents per share with high volume.

     

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in OIBR as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at 80 cents to 76 cents per share and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 14.72 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then OIBR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.02 to $1.08 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give OIBR a chance to tag its 50-day moving average of $1.18 to more resistance at $1.27.

    NII�Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: NIHD)�is trading as though the worst case scenario is headed its way. This is effective Nextel international, and the closure of its communications sites in Mexico sale did not seem to help matters. That call from a week earlier where HSBC abandoned ship after NII reported a wider loss, predicting that the stock would now go to $2.00 per share, is looking like that could be possible.     I normally don't look at charts much, but comparing Orange to its competitors in the French telecommunications market is quite fascinating. As one can see, incumbents Bouygues (BOUYF.PK) and Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) (owner of SFR) saw similar price declines. The market, on the other hand, rapidly bid up the price of new entrant Iliad SA (ILIAF.PK), as a result of forecasts for Iliad to capture significant mobile market share (which it did, around 10%). The Payment 'Float' May Soon Disappear

NEW YORK (MainStreet) The payment "float" has been deflating for years. The amount of time required to process payments has become shorter and more efficient, and soon may be instantaneous. The timeframe required for settlement of funds is an important consideration for businesses in managing cash flow, as well as earnings on demand deposit accounts.

Back when people issued checks for payment through the mail, the float could be more than one week. In the 1980s, mail often took four days to reach its destination. Businesses could take two days to receive and deposit payments and banks would require three days to settle the funds. That's a nine-day float, as estimated by Bottomline Technologies, a business payment solution provider. Today, a check-issued payment sees only about a three-day processing float.

Now, by a four-to-one margin, organizations in the electronic payments industry believe that the U.S. payment system should begin migrating to "real-time" settlement of transactions, according to a recent member survey conducted by the Electronic Funds Transfer Association. Real-time settlement would mean execution of electronic financial transactions without any delay, following the processing of the transactions. The Federal Reserve System is currently working with the payments industry to determine if converting electronic payments to real-time settlement is feasible. "Real-time payments will increase the efficiency of our payment systems," said Kurt Helwig, president and CEO of the Electronic Funds Transfer Association. "It is important for us to work with the Fed Banks in order to adapt to changing technology in order to remain competitive within the global markets." The industry seems poised to make the transition. A full 87% of respondents to the EFTA survey believe that achieving real-time settlement is a realistic goal. In fact, more than half of those surveyed believe that the Fed banks should set deadlines for the industry to convert to real-time settlement. But there are still concerns regarding fraud, cost and control. More than 60% of the respondents expressed concern over the ability to manage fraud within a real-time settlement framework. A similar percentage thought that the electronic funds industry, not the government, should lead the migration to real-time settlement, and that the Fed should conduct a cost-benefit analysis prior to moving forward. "We support the Fed in its effort to determine the feasibility of this concept," said Helwig. "However, there are a lot of details in the areas of fraud abatement, ROI and control to work out before you can get from concept to sub-second settlement." --Written by Hal M. There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold, but that lady is not Barclays, which named Goldcorp (GG) a top pick today.

Goldcorp has gained 3.4% today, about in line with the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF�(GDX) 3.5% rise. And much of the credit, of course, goes to the jump in gold prices: the�SPDR Gold Trust�(GLD) has gained 1.5%.

But Barclays has high hopes for Goldcorp, which it made one of its top picks for 2014 today. Analyst�Farooq Hamed�writes:

Goldcorp is the most compelling growth story in our coverage universe as the company�� development projects are well into the construction phase, with all of its current growth projects expected to commence first gold production within the next 18 months. We estimate gold production growth of 33% by the end of 2015. With 2013 being the company�� largest capex year, we expect spending to fall in 2014 by $0.5bn or 21%. Also, in 2013 GG executed a cost-cutting program, generating roughly $280mn in cost savings, some of which should translate favourably into lower operating costs. Looking at all-in sustaining costs across our coverage universe, we are forecasting $888/oz for Goldcorp in 2014, which falls in the lower half of our group, and sits well below the group average of $959/oz.

The shift to natural gas is creating subtle changes across America's highways. The number of natural gas fueling stations is on the rise. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman also said Tuesday that he's dropping a similar action against Bank of America, which has agreed to reforms of its lending system. The settlement of charges of improper lending practices sets standards that prohibit lenders from pursuing foreclosures while negotiating loan modifications. The standards require the banks to acknowledge refinancing applications in writing within three business days, notify borrowers of missing documents within five days and make decisions on complete applications within 30 days. Schneiderman said the settlement has brought relief to thousands of New York homeowners during the housing crisis and recession. "While we have brought much needed relief to thousands of New Yorkers, too many homeowners in our state are facing unnecessary challenges as they fight to keep their homes," Schneiderman said. "Both of these cases should send a strong message that the big banks must comply with the legally binding servicing standards negotiated in the national mortgage settlement or face the consequences." Wells Fargo (WFC) said it remains committed to the national settlement, which was agreed to by 49 states, including New York. "We are continuously implementing additional customer-focused measures based on the constructive feedback we receive from our customers, the Monitoring Committee and individual states," it said in a statement. "We have has been a leader in preventing foreclosures and helping families maintain home ownership with more than 880,000 modifications nationwide." Bank of America (BAC) said it was happy to resolve the case. "We're pleased with the significant assistance Bank of America has extended, and continues to extend, to homeowners through the National Mortgage Settlement, and we will continue working with attorneys general nationwide to continually improve the experience for customers eligible for these important programs," Bank of America spokesman Dan Frahm said. Wells Fargo had said in May that it was committed to full compliance with the settlement and its standards. It criticized Schneiderman then for failing to "engage in a constructive dialogue." The move by Schneiderman comes as the Department of Justice and his office have been in extensive negotiations with the biggest U.S. bank, JPMorgan Chase (JPM), over its sales of mortgage-backed securities in the years preceding the financial crisis. A possible settlement requiring Chase to pay as much as $11 billion has been under discussion. If such an agreement is reached, it could be used as a template for deals with other banks for their conduct in mortgage securities.

Hot Prefered Companies For 2014

LONDON -- To me, capital growth and dividend income are equally important. Together, they provide the total return from any share investment and, as you might expect, my aim is to invest in companies that can beat the total return delivered by the wider market.

To put that aim into perspective, the FTSE 100 has provided investors with a total return of around 3% per annum since January 2008.

If my investments are to outperform, I need to back companies that score well on several quality indicators, and buy at prices that offer decent value.

So, this series aims to identify appealing FTSE 100 investment opportunities, and today ,I'm looking at Tesco (LSE: TSCO  ) (NASDAQOTH: TSCDY  ) , the well-known supermarket chain.

With the shares at 366 pence, Tesco's market cap. is 29,520 million pounds.

The recent full-year results don't look very pretty at Tesco. It's hard to see anything attractive in a 14.5% reduction in underlying profits.

The FortiGate-20 through -100 series models are designed for perimeter protection for small- to mid-sized businesses, remote offices of distributed organizations and as customer premises equipment for service providers. Optional wireless LAN (WLAN), integration is available for the FortiGate-20, -40, -60 and -80 models, marketed as FortiWiFi, delivering additional network access and security for wireless environments. The FortiGate-200 through -800 series models are designed for perimeter deployment in mid-sized to enterprise networks. These products offer increased capacity and scalability designed to provide high network performance while delivering the same broad security suite as all FortiGate m! odels. Its standard technical support offering for its products, channel partners often provide first level support to the end-customer, especially for small and mid-sized end-customers, and the Company typically provides second and third level support to its end-customers.
